Vehicle Overview

The 2015 Mitsubishi Triton GLX Club Cab Chassis 4WD is presented as a practical work-focused ute that also makes a convincing case for everyday usability. As part of the fifth-generation MQ Triton range, it combines the straightforward functionality expected of a cab-chassis vehicle with a more composed driving experience than the traditional workhorse brief might suggest.

Its strongest attribute is the balance between carrying ability and road manners. The tested specification is quoted with a 1125kg payload and a 3100kg braked towing capacity, supported by a 5785kg gross combination mass. Those figures give the Triton useful flexibility for equipment, materials and recreational loads, while the review notes that the quoted capacities are specific to the Club Cab GLX configuration rather than representative of every Triton variant.

The suspension uses double wishbones at the front and leaf springs at the rear, a conventional arrangement for a vehicle designed to carry weight and travel beyond sealed roads. Despite that robust hardware, the review describes the ride as composed and quiet. There is a firmer feel from the rear when the tray is unladen, but surface imperfections are dealt with effectively, helping the Triton remain comfortable during ordinary driving as well as when the vehicle is being used for work.

Power comes from Mitsubishi's 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, producing 133kW at 3500rpm and 430Nm at 2500rpm. The broad torque delivery is particularly useful in a cab-chassis ute, where smooth low-speed response and the ability to maintain momentum under load matter more than outright acceleration. The six-speed manual transmission is described as clean and well matched to the vehicle, while the progressive clutch and well-controlled brakes contribute to a more manageable driving experience.

The cabin is functional rather than decorative, with simple instrumentation, straightforward controls and sensible ergonomics. The slightly larger interior provides supportive front seating, useful grab handles and good outward visibility for a vehicle of this type. That makes the Triton easier to live with over a working day or on longer trips. The dashboard design is conservative, but its uncomplicated layout supports the vehicle's practical purpose.

Manoeuvrability is another notable strength. A 3000mm wheelbase, 11.8-metre turning circle and well-assisted steering help the Triton negotiate tighter urban spaces and narrower tracks. The review also found it capable of handling fire trails and confined off-road routes with confidence. However, the tray-bodied configuration creates a compromise around rearward visibility. The mirror spacers provide clearance around the tray, but road mist can collect on the mirror glass in wet conditions, and the base grade does not include heated mirrors.

Fuel use was less convincing in the test. While the ADR Combined figure is stated as 7.2L/100km, the observed test result was 10.2L/100km, with an around-town figure of 8.1L/100km. Actual consumption will vary with load, conditions and driving style, but the difference between the official and observed results is worth considering when assessing the vehicle's operating costs.

Overall, this Triton specification is characterised by useful payload and towing capability, a durable four-wheel-drive layout and a cabin that is more comfortable and composed than its utilitarian purpose might imply. It remains a work-oriented vehicle first, but its ride quality, torque delivery and manageable dimensions broaden its appeal beyond strictly commercial use.
